New IEC 61131-3 Programming Tools For OrionLX

IEC 61131-3 is now available in the OrionLX, along with the other four Math & Logic tools.

NovaTech
Orion LX

What is IEC 61131-3?

IEC 61131-3 is the international standard for programmable logic controller (PLC) programming languages and specifies the syntax, semantics and display for five languages. Multiple language support in IEC 61131-3 enables the control program developer to select the language that is best suited to a particular task.

IEC 61131-3 Ladder Diagram example in OrionLX

Tasks and languages include:

Graphic Programming Interfaces

  • Ladder Diagrams (LD): traditional PLC "Ladder Logic"
  • Function Block Diagrams (FBD): uses "functions" between input variables and output variables

Text-based Programming Interfaces

Structured Text (ST): a text-based high level language that syntactically resembles Pascal. Complex statements and nested instructions are supported:

  • Iteration loops (REPEAT-UNTIL; WHILE-DO)
  • Conditional execution (IF-THEN-ELSE; CASE)
  • Functions (SQRT(), SIN())
  • Instruction List (IL): an efficient, text-based, low level language that resembles assembly

Flow-Chart-based Programming Interface

Sequential Flow Charts (SFC): a language to model complex programs such as DA scenarios with second contingencies, load-checking and multiple alternate sources.

Full Integration with NCD

Orion IEC 61131-3 is fully integrated in the Orion NCD (NovaTech Communications Director) configuration software.

All points and records accessed from IEDs by Orion (SCADA data, fault data from SEL® Short Event Summaries, etc.) or points generated internally (diagnostic data, comms data, etc.) are available for use in OrionLX IEC 61131-3 math and logic schemes.

Offline Simulation and Secure Online Viewing of Logic Execution

OrionLX IEC 61131-3 includes an offline simulator to view logic execution exactly as it will appear when running online in the OrionLX.

New Direct VGA Video for
OrionLX Substation Automation Platform

 NovaTech

 OrionLX

Think about it...

... An OrionLX that provides all of the functions of a hardened

substation HMI with no PC and no license fees.

... An OrionLX that can exist on three different Ethernet networks:

one for SCADA, one for Engineering, and one for substation devices.

... A new OrionLX CPU with two to three times more power than a

      standard OrionLX.

With PCs applied in critical substations now being designated by NERC as "critical cyber assets," engineers need to consider alternatives to the substation PC. With the OrionLX and the new Direct Video option, the substation HMI PC can be replaced with a simpler VGA terminal, eliminating HMI-related security concerns.

The OrionLX Direct Video option is comprised of:
  • a new Multimedia Board with VGA port, audio port, USB ports and a third Ethernet port (with separate NIC), and
  • a new 1.33GHz High-Performance  CPU, which is included to provide the additional support for video, communications processing, protocol conversion and logic.

Both Multimedia Board and High Performance CPU can be factory retrofitted into existing OrionLX Automation Processors.

The pages viewable as "Direct Video" are the same OrionLX pages that can be viewed as VGA video or secure webpages, including the OrionLX online Conguration and diagnostic pages, Alarm pages, Trending pages, Sequence of Event pages and custom user-design pages. An open source SVG graphics editor produces the Orion WEBserver HMI screens.

A complete security package is included with the Direct Video option, including user sign-on, rewalling, user activity logging and authorization for executing controls, applying tags or acknowledging alarms.

As with all NovaTech Orion products, no special software needs to be purchased to setup and use the Direct Video option and no licensing fees are required.

New Bitronics® 50-Series SCADA Meter:
The M653 Three-At-Once Display Meter

The Bitronics® M653 from NovaTech is a three-display-at-once meter mounted in a 19", 3U high panel. This gives users who want to display three values at once (such as 3-phase volts, 3-phase amps and total Watt/VAR) a simple way to hook up one meter and have the three-screen display they want without having to install and wire up three separate meters.

The M653 is a great value compared with the cost of separate SCADA meters. Setup of the left and right screens is very simple either from the webpage or directly from the front display. The left and right arrow keys are used to "capture" the screen from the center screen and move it to either of the outer screens.

The M653 joins the previously announced M650 SCADA Meter and M651 SCADA Transducer along with the M350 Family of 3-phase Ammeters and Voltmeters.

New Split-Core CT Option for Bitronics 50-Series SCADA Meters

Bitronics - The Engineer's Choice

Utility-Grade Engineering Outperforms Competitive Solutions

Clamp-on CTs present a faster, easier way to install power measurement IEDs, but often come with unacceptable compromises to consistent and accurate measurements.

Engineers at the Bitronics Power Measurement Group have elegantly addressed this issue with the new external split-core CT option, available for all 50 Series SCADA Meters. The split-core CTs improve on competing designs in three major aspects:

1.) High-Permeability Nickel Core

Bitronics has chosen a high quality, made in the USA CT. The CTs have heat-treated high-permeability ("superm") nickel core material that produces superior low-end response, phase angle response, and repeatability characteristics compared to ferrite core material used by some competitors. Nickel core material is not brittle, a major limitation of ferrite material. Even the tension exerted on a ferrite core CT by its secondary windings is often sufficient to chip or fracture the core, affecting its magnetic characteristics. Rough handling can easily fracture ferrite core CTs.

2.) Spring Tensioned 2-Bolt Gate

The spring-tensioned 2-bolt gate in the core is more durable than the hinge-and-snap type gates used by some competitors. The 2-bolt gate construction also produces less variation in the magnetic characteristics as a result of repeated opening and closing of the gate. The mating surfaces where the gate closes the core are lapped for a near-perfect mating surface in order to minimize the impact on the magnetic characteristics caused by the necessity of having a break in the core.

3.) Individually Calibrated

The characteristics of excellent response and repeatability of the nickel core material make it possible to further linearize the output in the calibration of the 50 Series meter. The 50 Series meter is calibrated to linearize the response of the transformer, resulting in a significant improvement relative to the accuracy claimed by the CT manufacturer. As a result, the accuracy is equal to that of the standard 50 Series meter (which would operate directly in the primary CT circuit). That's the 0.2S class, defined by the IEC standard that governs revenue meter accuracy (IEC 62053-22 & 23, and generally described as 0.2% of reading).
