The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground

For over 20 years The Klezmatics have been at the vanguard of the
international Klezmer revival movement. The Grammy award-winning group
has redefined the boundaries of contemporary Jewish music, through nine
albums and collaborations with such diverse artists as Chava
Alberstein, Arlo Guthrie, Itzhak Perlman and Joshua Nelson.
Following
the group through tours in the US, Germany and Poland, this strikingly
honest documentary portrait reveals the challenges faced by the
Klezmatics as they strive to continue making joyous, boundary-breaking
music while balancing the demands of family, career and their own
individual lives.
Yiddishkayt is proud to have been a supporter of The Klezmatics for over a decade. We were there as a sponsor for their sold out Los Angeles mainstream debut at UCLA Live in 1997, at two shows at the Ford Amphitheater in 2000 and for their return performance to UCLA Live in 2009. This special screening is being held as a tribute to Libby Sklamberg, oley ha'sholem, a long-time friend of Yiddishkayt and the mother of The Klezmatics' Lorin Sklamberg.
JUST ANNOUNCED: This screening will also feature a question & answer panel with the film's producer/director Erik Greenberg Anjou and Lorin Sklamberg, founding member of the Klezmatics.

| JOB DESCRIPTION:* Support research, development and administration of Yiddishkayt's newest educational program Folks-Grupe: The Yiddishkayt Fellowship, a four-month immersion in Yiddish culture for young adults * Assist with planning and facilitating other cultural and educational events* Communicate with members, artists, and community through email, phone, and mail * Assist with communications, marketing, PR, fundraising and grant preparation activities * Assist in daily administration of a non-profit arts/culture organization OUR PROJECTS INCLUDE:
Folks-Grupe: The Yiddishkayt Fellowship, a program dedicated to Yiddish cultural literacy for young adults.
Yiddish Cultural Events: Ongoing dynamic lectures, concerts, festivals and films exploring Yiddish culture.
Educational initiatives: Integrating Yiddish language instruction into Jewish days schools in North America and Israel.
Boyle Heights Tours: In development and partnership with the Jewish Historical Society and focused on the Yiddish history of Los Angeles.
EXPERIENCE: We seek an organized, creative, and motivated multi-tasker and self-starter with excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. Computer knowledge is a must. (Mac preferable). Knowledge of Yiddish, the nonprofit sector, and the Los Angeles Jewish community is very helpful, but not necessary.
DATES: Beginning in June and ending in August, for a 10-week period.
STIPEND: $3,500
ELIGIBILITY: Internship position is limited to currently enrolled (full-time) undergraduates and graduating seniors who reside or attend college in Los Angeles County, and who will have completed at least one semester of college by June 2010 or who will have completed their undergraduate degree by September 1, 2010.

 VORTSMAN - RIDDLE ME THIS

The Vortsman, meaning "man of his word," brings you the story of a different Yiddish word or phrase each month.
Written by Hershl Hartman, long-time Yiddishkayt Board Member and Education Director at the Sholem Community
Having inveighed against some unusual "Yinglish" words in his last column, The Vortsman does a hasty 180 this time out, thanks to a reader who recalled some examples.
Our reader remembers learning that Yiddish-speaking immigrants adapted English words into their speech and that one of them was sharap--their version of "shut up!" He goes on to recall being taught that this produced the Yinglish word for an infant's pacifier: sharapke.
(Actually, there's a traditional old-country word, smotshik.)
All of which reminded the Vortsman that his own mentor in Yiddish literature, the critic, educator and editor (until his death at 103), Itche Goldberg, had once argued that some Yiddish coinages from English were as legitimate as the many words adapted earlier from Russian and Polish.
Itche noted, too, that Yiddish-speakers were not alone in adapting English to their native languages. He quoted a Polish-speaking woman in Hamtramck, MI, who said that her job was vashovatsh flori--to wash floors.
Among the Yinglish words Itche cited as legitimate because they used Yiddish forms: nekstdorike, apstezike and donstezike--respectively referring to a woman who lived "next door, "upstairs" and, of course, "downstairs."
The Vortsman is also reminded that Sholom Aleichem (as his U.S. copyrights transliterate his name), in his brief final years in New York, caught the flavor of Yinglish and had fun with it in his final work, "Motl, Peyse The Cantor's Son, in America."
