Dear Friend of Yiddish,
Don't forget to join Yiddishkayt on Thursday night at the Skirball Cultural Center for the L.A. premiere of Gadji-Gadjo, a rollicking Roma and Klezmer band from Quebec. They are renowned for their high-energy live shows, celebrating two great musical traditions with passion and zest. Enjoy this FREE outdoor concert as the sun sets behind the Santa Monica Mountains. More info below.
And don't forget to join us at the Arbeter Ring (Workmen's Circle) on Saturday night for a book party celebrating the re-release of Yiddish Sayings Mama Never Taught You. Authors Marvin Zuckerman and Gershon Weltman will introduce you to vulgar, bawdy, and erotic folk sayings that your Yiddishe Mama probably didn't want you to know, but they illuminate an important historical chapter in our history. More info below.
Mark your calendar for August 9. In the afternoon, join us at Sorrowfully and Joyfully: Homage to Soviet Yiddish Creativity, the community's annual tribute to Soviet Yiddish writers. And in the evening, the L.A. Jewish Symphony presents L'Khayim! A Musical Celebration of Eastern European Culture at the Ford Amphitheater. More info below.
See you on Thursday (and Saturday)!

Join us on August 1st to celebrate the return of Yiddish Sayings Mama Never Taught You
by Marvin S. Zuckerman and Gershon Weltman. This important collection
of Yiddish folk sayings has long been out of print - after thirty years
it is now back in print! In 1975 authors Zuckerman and Weltman translated, transliterated and
reprinted the original Yiddish text of "coarse and vulgar" Yiddish
sayings that had been privately published in 1908 by the famous
collector of Yiddish folk sayings, Ignaz Bernstein (you can find him in
the "Lexicon of Modern Yiddish Literature" and other sources). He
called them, in Latin, "Erotica and Rustica." The book will be available for purchase and signing. Refreshments will be served.
Presented by Arbeter Ring (Workmen's Circle). Cosponsored by Yiddishkayt.
