Extreme
Klezmer Makeover specializes in playing the
driving, playful Eastern European rhythms of the 19th
century or their own brand of progressive 21st
Century Klezmer with twists of Cajun, R&B, American
Folk, Middle Eastern and Jazz flavors.
The band features multi-instrumentalist Joellen
Lapidus on clarinet, accordion and dulcimer, and film
and TV composer Dan Radlauer on accordion, guitar
and mandolin. Filling out the line-up is the exotic
drumming of Jamie Papish on Cajon(wooden box
drum), Doumbek(Middle Eastern drum), Tombak
(Persian drum), Riqq(Arabic tambourine), shakers,
bells and brushes; the pumping slapping bass of Dan
Dungan and the whimsical, soaring, heart clenching
violin of Ross Levinson.

See Hale Porter’s one-man show, “And the
Angels Sing”: Yidishe Angels in American Music,
at Workmen’s Circle on Sunday, March 18th. Enjoy
his unusual repertoire of Yiddish, Broadway, and
American songs, with some familiar, as well as some
less
familiar gems. Did you know that Aaron Copland's
“Vitebsk” Trio is
based on Ansky’s play The Dybbuk? Songs by
Irving Berlin and George Gershwin are on the
program, but also learn of their
connections to Yiddish theatre and the liturgical
tradition.
Hale Porter is a local treasure, with cantorial, theatre,
concert hall, opera, cabaret, Borsht Belt, TV and film
credits. One Boston reviewer wrote: “Porter is a
magnificent baritone and a strong actor. He turns his
songs into art songs of lyric beauty and rugged
strength, treating them with the kind of care and
dramatic flourish one sees on the operatic stage.”
Advance tickets (purchased before the end of the day
Wednesday, March 14) are $10 for WC members and
$14 for nonmembers. From Thursday, March 15 until
showtime, tickets will be $12 for members and $16
for nonmembers. Save by ordering now! Send
checks to Workmen’s Circle, 1525 S. Robertson
Blvd., L.A. 90035. Credit card orders available by
phone for purchase of two tickets or more.
