your friends at Yiddishkayt Los Angeles!
There are some great upcoming Khanike events
that we’re very excited about:
If you’ve ever been tempted to attend an
intensive Yiddish language and culture program, but
were unable make it to one of the Summer Programs in
New York, Vilnius, Tel Aviv or Paris, this is your
lucky month. The California Institute for Yiddish
Culture & Language (CIYCL) presents The Art of
Yiddish 2006, a week of Yiddish classes,
lectures and concerts hosted at the Skirball
Institute from December 16-21.
Next Wednesday
(12/13), the klezmer-punk band, Golem, is capping a
night of social-justice, comedy, and more at The
10th Annual Vodka Latke: A Festival of Rights.
On December 15th, be sure to tune in to KCRW for
Philosophers, Fiddlers & Fools: A Farewell.
Listen to the final broadcast of Ruth Seymour’s
28-year annual tribute to Yiddishkayt from 1 to 3 pm
on 89.9 fm. Click

for the program.
Celebrate the season with your kids at the Matzah
Ball Books Hanukkah Party (12/17).

Joyous Hanukkah (12/21).

menorah-lighting ceremony, and a spectacularly
entertaining reading of the Hanukah tale in Heaping

Rights with a unique menorah-lighting by local
social justice activists, featuring Los Angeles
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Then watch LA's Heebster
comedians, writers, magicians, and performers -
including Six Feet Under's Jill Soloway and Brothers
and Sister's Craig Wright - tackle the holiday from
an entirely new perspective in Heaping Hanukah.
Finally, Golem takes the night to a raucous,
high-energy finale. Presented by PJA, JDub Records,

THE ART OF YIDDISH 2006
Stage Presents: The Gift of Yiddish Theater
Now in its seventh year, this community and
international event is for all ages and interests.
The only program of its kind on the West Coast, it
offers a chance to remember and celebrate the global
legacy the world nearly lost. No previous knowledge
of Yiddish needed.
Starting with a not-to-be-missed Opening Concert
with Mike Burstyn on the evening of Saturday,
December 16, The Art of Yiddish focuses on one of
the most beloved aspects of Jewish culture --
Yiddish theater. The week’s presentations and
performances by leading experts and artists reveal
why Yiddish theater is so unique and why it still
delights and fascinates.
Morning language classes offer a brilliant crash
course in Yiddish taught by an eminent international
faculty, designed for students of all levels, from
complete novice to the maven (expert). A
conversation-only class available too, with no or
a bisl speaking skills required.
Come for a day, a lecture or concert, or the entire
special week!
All events at the Skirball Cultural Center, Los
Angeles.
