No Reprieve from Allergies!

Ragweed Pollen

Though the flowers are no longer blooming and the air has turned crisp and cool, many allergy sufferers get no reprieve during the fall months. The allergy triggers might be different, but they can be just as miserable as the flower pollen that fills the air in the spring and summer.

The most popular in the fall season are ragweed, mold, and  dust mites.

We've included a list of things that you can do to minimize your exposure to these allergens.

  1. Stay indoors as much as possible in the early morning when the pollen is released
  2. Monitor pollen counts in your area by visiting the National Allergy Bureau at http://www.aaaai.org/nab
  3. After being outside, remove your shoes and clothing upon entering your home to minimize the spread of the pollen inside.
  4. Keep the windows at home and in your car closed.
  5. Use air conditioning as long as possible to clean the air.
  6. Wash sheets and bedding weekly to reduce dust mites.
  7. Vacuum your carpet, floors, and mattresses regularly using a HEPA filtration system.
  8. Eliminate cockroaches, as their wast produces allergens.
  9. Wash pets weekly to reduce pet dander.

Ragweed
Giant RagweedDuring the fall season, ragweed is the biggest allergy trigger. Though the yellow-flowering weed typically begins pollinating in august, it can linger well into the fall months. About 3/4 of the people who are allergic to spring pollen-producing pleants are also allergic to ragweed. Ragweed can travel for hundreds of miles on the wind, so even if it doesn't grow where you live, it can still make your life miserable if you're allergic to it.
Mold
MoldMold is another culprit, because it's spores can easily get airborne. Mold thrives in damp areas, both indoors and outdoors. The piles of damp leaves that line the yards in the fall are breeding grounds for mold. So take preventive measures before raking the yard if you have mold allergies. Damp basements, bathrooms, or any area where moisture accumulates will also be a breeding ground inside of your home.
Dust Mites
Dust MitesSeasonal allergies can be further aggravated by poor air quality inside of the home. Dust Mites are tiny insects that are invisible to the human eye, but are found in nearly every home in the US. They feed on skin flakes and dust in your home. They are normally found on mattresses, pillows, carpets, and upholstered furniture, especially around pet areas. Dust Mites are most prevalent in the humid summer months, but can get stirred into the air the first time you turn on the furnace in the fall.
Children and Fall Allergies
For children, the start of school usually means the beginning of fall allergy symptoms. Dust Mites and mold flourish in schools. Add to that chalk dust, which gets airborne with the bang of an eraser, and the wheezing begins. It is the same in your home. You can take control of your environment by improving the quality of your indoor air and create a cleaner, fresher air to breathe.
