Fall Fun Facts

Trees take water from the ground through their roots & take carbon dioxide from the air. They also use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar which together is called photosynthesis.

The leave colors red, yellow & brown are in the leaves all year long & only become exposed when the green chlorophyll disappears in the fall.

Mulching fall leaves where they fall lets them decompose so that they can release their minerals back to the underlying soil.

Maples, Oaks, Elms, Birch & Ash trees are just a few of the trees that give spectacular colors during the Autumn season.

Fall days become shorter & many plants stop making food. That is when the green chlorophyll starts to disappear from the leaves.

Most leaves fall from trees because the ends of the branch are sealed off near the leaf stem to protect the tree through the long winter months.

Fall Cleaning

Fall is an ideal time to spruce up your home. With kids going back to school and starting a new year, look at autumn as a fresh start for your house, too.

Outdoors
Wash your windows inside and especially outside. Don't wait until spring to give your whole house a brighter outlook by washing your windows.

Before you store your patio furniture and children's outdoor toys, wash them off and cover them in plastic or old bed sheets.

Check the caulk, seals and weather stripping around all windows and doors and repair as needed. Wipe down window wells and ledges. Hose and wipe down exterior doors.

Drain and store garden hoses. If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, have it professionally blown out and winterized.

Check gutters and downspouts and clear out debris, to avoid ice dams.

Clean out your garage and hose out all the summer dirt and grime.

Inside the House

Have your fireplace and chimney inspected, cleaned and ready for winter use.

Change your furnace filters for cleaner air and a more efficient heating system.

Fall is a good time to replace batteries in your smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and other home saving devices.

Get your beds ready for a cozy winter. Fall is also a good time to do twice-annual mattress turns. Flip your mattress this fall and next spring, turn it end-to-end. Launder or dry clean all bedding you don't do every week, such as mattress pads, pillows, blankets, bed skirts and bedspreads.

Schedule a professional carpet cleaning or rent a carpet cleaner and do it yourself.
Clean out your kitchen cupboards and pantry, paying particular attention to baking supplies, pans and equipment that you'll need for holiday baking.

Pull your refrigerator, clothes washer and dryer out from the wall and clean behind them (and retrieve any long lost socks!). Brush dust off of refrigerator coils and use a narrow vacuum hose attachment to clean inside the lint catcher of your dryer.

Aspen, Colorado

Mid-September heralds the start of fall foliage season, when Colorado's famous aspen trees turn a brilliant yellow-gold. There's no better place to see them than their namesake town, Aspen, Colorado.

The surrounding slopes of the Rocky Mountains are covered in bright autumn color, easily seen on a gentle hike or fall foliage drive.

Aspen may be an old silver mining town, but in the autumn it shimmers with Colorado gold. Groves of slender, white-barked aspen trees tumble down the slopes right into the town. Their tear-shaped leaves are luminescent in the bright sunshine. Tissue-thin, they flicker in the faintest breeze, undulating up and down the hillsides with a rustling sigh.

It's a joy to walk among them. And you don't have to go far. The John Denver Sanctuary is set in an aspen grove along the river, one of the prettiest spots in town for fall foliage.
